Why are we doing this?
comobilis.org deeply believes that shared mobility will make our neighbourhoods & cities more liveable & sustainable, which could improve the lives of over half the people on our planet.
Your Circle may at first be attracted to saving time & money, but then you experience first-hand how comobility rebuilds community & a sense of solidarity, which leads to more projects with a purpose. How about freeing up parking spaces to add a playground, or a shared garden, or a greenway? We'll let you come up with the great ideas.
You, COmobilist may be attracted to the sense of purpose that COcreating a Circle gives you. The experience of collaborating & building community, while saving yourself time & money, and improving your health & quality of life, well it just seems too good to be true. How can COmobility not become the new normal?
How do I/we start a Circle?
Go to comobilis.org and fill out this form. Within a few days we'll create a private space on comobilis.org where can cocreate your Circle. It's free while you are setting things up. Once you are sharing vehicles, we'll ask you to start paying membership dues.
What's the ideal Circle?
Short answer: we don't know, yet. That's the reason our tools allow you to experiment, and share your experiences, so that together we can answer that question.
We've learned that: in a urban environment, with public transport, a Circle of 15-20 households and 3-5 businesses can share a mix of 8-10 vehicles quite efficiently (van, cars, cargo bikes, plus shared transport passes).
- in a suburban area, a Circle of 3-5 households can share 1 car, rather than each own a second car. If you increase the reach to a neighbourhood of 50 households, and mix types of vehicles, 10 vehicles is sufficient. That's a savings of over $100,000/yr for the COmobilists in that Circle. Pool that money, and imagine what you could do for the neighbourhood..
Only have 1 car to share? It's a great place to start, and you'll probably be able to share the expenses with 2 other households. However, the more COmobilists, the more likely you are to get the right vehicle at the right time.
Are you Management in a Company? We'd love to experiment with a system where the company has no ownership of vehicles, but pays the employee for the use of their own private vehicles, when needed by others from the company. The company saves parking spaces and the costs of vehicle ownership, while the employee collects money for a car that is normally parked and doing nothing.
Are you an employee in a Company? We'd love to experiment with a system where the company makes it's fleet available to the employee from the end of day, until the next morning, when the company has no need. It's a win/win situation.
Do you live in a village? We'd love to analyse the real-use of mobility of your whole village, to help you determine how many vehicles you really need (Thanks David Dräyer for the idea). Then we can help you set up and manage that shared fleet. It'll probably be about 1 vehicle per 10 households. Imagine what you can do with the space that is freed up by the vehicles that used to be parked 95% of the time...
Who pays what?
comobilis is non-profit & 95% volunteer. In order to fully pursue our mission, and provide a professional level of service, we have chosen the fastest and easiest model to implement; membership dues of XX/year/COmobilist. (we're looking for someone to fundraise, could that be you?). Your dues pay for servers, maintenance, 3G communication to/from your vehicles, training sessions/hackathons, development, & a bit of admin. We update our accounts on a regular basis, and they are posted on comobilis.org. Complete transparency.
Your Circle will pay membership dues yearly for each Comobilist account in your Circle, once your Circle is sharing vehicles. The Circle is responsible for payment to comobilis.org and decides how it would like to cover these costs. Past due accounts may lead to limited access to comobilis for the Circle. The Circle owns and manages the different forms of COmobility, and is financially responsible for them.
You, COmobilist must pay the bills that you owe to your Circle. Your Circle may block access to your account for Past due bills.
Who cocreates what?
COmobilists cocreate
Circles, that help cocreate
comobilis.org that cocreates tools for the whole community.
How do we decide?
comobilis.org, during this start up phase, has used consensus, and since we all live in Switzerland, we're used to it. We are now considering Holacracy or Sociocracy for the upcoming Sonic Boom phase, and beyond.
Your Circle is free to choose the methodology that fits your style while setting up your governance framework. We provide information, tools, and help you ask the right questions.
You, COmobilist are bound to respect the methodology that your Circle has selected. If you are one of the founding members, you get to help decide how to decide.
Who does what, when?
comobilis.org provides a set of tools that enable citizens to cocreate Circles and manage their shared mobility. Within the association, individuals make their own operational decisions, whereas the whole organisation is called upon a few times a year for strategic decisions.
Your Circle is self-governed and makes all decisions. We provide a list of things that your Circle needs to do, or decide, such as: "which vehicles, and how do we share & manage them?", "who does what, when?" etc... and you do the rest.
Your COordinator's role & responsibilities are defined by your Circle. We've found that it's good to take turns every year or so, and have several COordinators when your fleet increases to over 4.
You, COmobilist participate in your Circle's decisions, using the chosen methodolgy, within it's framework.
Who's responsible for what?
comobilis.org is responsible for providing 99% uptime on the platform, and protecting your private data, as well as promoting and lobbying for Mobility, shared.
Your Circle is responsible for your own governance framework, your shared mobility assets, as well as your own financial sustainability.
You, COmobilist are responsible for respecting the guidelines set up by your Circle, as well as for payment for the use of your Circle's shared mobility.
Who owns what?
comobilis.org doesn't own anything really. We just provide the means for you to share mobility. Software, nope, hardware, nope, it's all open-source. Can you think of anything we own? The name, but then that belongs to all of us.
Your Circle owns the vehicles that you share, as well as any accessories and deposits that you may hold from your COmobilists.
You, COmobilist may own "shares" or a deposit, but that depends on how your Circle raised money to purchase your vehicles.
Who can see which information?
comobilis.org can see parts of your Circle's content, which helps us improve the tools and provide better guidelines for future Circles. For example, a few Caretakers @comobilis can see the contents (but not the author) of the following tools that we provide: "Suggestions" (all), "Discussions" (only channels that are expressly shared with comobilis), and "Cocreate & Manage" (Difficulties section). Our site and server administrators, Tim Anderson, Geneva, and Phil Stevens, Auckland, are able to see all the information in your Circle, if required.
Your Circle decides on one of the 3 levels of transparency between members. On the comobilis.org section, you can see other members of other Circles, if they have chosen to publish their profiles.
Your COordinator, can see/modify the profiles of all COmobilists in the Circle, in order to do his/her job. They may be able to see usage statistics in order to better manage your fleet*.
You, COmobilist can see all information pertinent to your account, including reservations and billing, maybe more.*
*Depending on the transparency level chosen by the Circle
